Fermoy Estate

Fermoy EstateDespite a history of little more than two decades, Fermoy Estate's wines have won acclaim which belies the vineyard's relative youth. Its Cabernet Sauvignon scooped a Gold Sheraton wine award within its first year of production and its Merlot, Chardonnay and Semillon have also been hailed at both wine shows and in the marketplace. The vineyard was established in 1985, and completed its first vintage in 1988. A total of 14 hectares is now planted which in full production should yield around 160 tonnes of premium fruit.

Fermoy EstateWine maker Elizabeth Dawson completed her wine science degree with Curtin University in 2002.  She went on to win the “Talijancich Award” for dux of Oenology.  In 2003 worked vintage with St Hallett’s in Barossa Valley, South Australia. Later that year worked as assistant winemaker in Napa Valley, California.  She came to Fermoy in 2004 for vintage then spent the winter months in Bordeaux, France. In summer of 2005 Liz completed vintage again for Fermoy and later that year travelled to London to be sales assistant for the Harrods’s Liquor Department.  Liz joined Fermoy Estate Full time in 2006.

McLaren Vale
McLaren Vale

Only a half hours drive South of Adelaide is one of Australia’s oldest winemaking regions. Englishman George Pitches Manning founded Seaview winery in 1850. The flats of the McLaren Vale are compared often with the Mediterranean climate, warm sunny days with fresh sea breezes to temper high summer heats.

Its proximity to the Mount Lofty Ranges sees the cool gully winds fall down from the hills in the late evening and early morning, chilling the grapes to retain crisp acidity and structure. Long dry summers through to late autumn, means McLaren Vale is considered one of the safest wine growing regions in Australia.

Engine Room
Engine Room

The team at Shottesbrooke in McLaren Flat have created a new youth-focused brand called Engine Room, which is targeted at none-wine focused drinkers. Winemaker Hamish Maguire says the target market is 21 to 39 year olds who want a quality wine to enjoy with friends without the wine jargon.

“The Engine Room brand came about because we wanted to focus on developing international markets, and we didn’t want to do that with our Shottesbrooke brand, which has a strong domestic following and consistent sales, “ he said. “We chose the name ‘Engine Room’ because that’s where I work as a winemaker and its really the heart of the whole operation.”

The front label of the 2005 Engine Room Shiraz tells the story of a winemaker’s day by using a range of facial images in a 1950s style.
Hamish says they decided to remove the traditional back label because the target market is not interested in reading tasting notes. “We want to capture them with the label and the imagery and the quality of the wine without over-powering them with wine-speak,” he said.

In the same way, the 2006 Chardonnay Sauvignon Semillion tells the story of the wine-makers wife-the “VintageWidow”, who looks like Marilyn Monroe.
The Shiraz label reflects Hamish’s individual personality through a clever design that even features a stylised version of his own face.

Torzi Matthews, a food and winemaking partnership between Domenic Torzi and Tracy Matthews have passion and the firm conviction of appreciating the value of heritage tradition in the crafting of their wines and extra virgin olive oils.
Domenic is a fifth generation Calabrian - Abruzzese stock and grew up on the Adelaide Plains working for the family's market gardens as for Tracy she was born and raised in Sydney’s Newcastle with a long career in hospitality.

Torzi MatthewsIn 1996 Tracy and I stumbled across a small, frost-pocketed hollow in the beautiful Mt McKenzie, Eden Valley and fell in love with the area for its remoteness and its diverse thin soils. Our Eden Valley Riesling employs our European non-interventional methods with hand picked, whole bunch press free run juice fermented naturally by the indigenous yeasts from the vineyard.

Arjen’ s view: As the Schist Rock Riesling this wine over delivers compared to the price. The 07 vintage was selected as no. 1 Smart buy by Wine Spectator with 92 pts. The 2008 isn’t less impressive and I foresee a great popularity for this wine

Barossa

The discovery of this wine, reminded us why we are so passionate about the boutique wine business. This is a genuine boutique wine, only 200 cases made per year and from vines more than 150 year old, a truly unique wine.

Thanks to introduction by Domenic Torzi, we got to taste this wine and were able to secure the last few cases available. Hopefully we will secure a larger share with the bottling of the 2006 vintage.

Cirillo Estate

Cirillo Estate

Situated in the old “Seigersdorf” or “Light Pass” area of the Barossa Valley is one of the oldest Grenache vineyards left in the world. The gnarly basket pruned bush vines were planted in 1850 and stand up to 6 feet high and nearly 6 feet wide. The Cirillo family have been the custodians of this great legacy for the past 35 years.

Even with 8 generations of grape growing and winemaking, it was not until 2003 when the first Cirillo 1850 Grenache was produced solely from these great vines for sale to the public.

2004 & 2005 Cirillo 1850 Grenache

Colour: Ruby red and Burgundy

Nose: the nose  shows concentrated berry fruit with hints of capsicum, white pepper, Jubey raspberry and has an earthy & gamey character

Palate: the palate opens up with gorgeous meat, spice, animal and mineral aromas backed by the more typical Australian Grenache signature of cherry liqueur. The palate is dense for Grenache; multilayered with perfect balance. But what really stands out is the structure – a core of acidity that drives the finish and mature fine grained tannins.

Cellar note: The quality is there already but you keep this wine for another 10 to 20 years

Food pairing: This is a big wine that goes with big meat dishes like roasted goat or lamb, also with pasta dishes and spicy Italian or Spanish sausages and all kind of cheeses.

Arjen’ s view: A beautiful full flavoured wine that brings depth and complexity and those 150 year old vines are not tired of bringing that unique accent to this wine. When you enjoy this wine, you don’t realize it is above 16% alcohol, as it is well integrated.

A final tip for this big wine: please don’t let it warm up too much or the high alcohol level will play up and decanting is a must to let it breath, the longer, the better.

Clare Valley - South Australia
Clare Valley - South Australia

Clare Valley is one of the most north positioned wine regions of South Australia. It climates knows hot summer days with plenty of sunshine and wet and cold winters. This climate allows the wineries to grow a wide selection of varieties from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Grenache to Tempranillo. Surprisingly the Riesling has become Clare Valley’s flagship varietal, this due to abundant sunshine, allowing the fruit to fully ripen. As a result Clare Valley Riesling is a dry style Riesling with a mineral character.

Arjen’ s view: This is truly a flagship wine and it has always been a fast-seller for Pikes. A delicate dry white wine with that bite of citrus and minerality, a class on its own!

Clare Valley - South Australia

Clare Valley - South Australia
Clare Valley - South AustraliaGaelic Cemetery Wines is a joint venture between Pikes Wines and Barletta Bros. The brief for the venture is simple and that is to craft small volumes of a super premium, single vineyard-single varietal Clare Valley wine that best reflects the vintage, varietal and uniqueness of place.

The joint venture and label are named after the originating vineyard site on Gaelic Cemetery Road, next to the historic cemetery of the region’s Scottish pioneers. The label design reflects the simplicity and minimal intervention approach that is taken with the wine. The central image of the thistle is taken from one of the original headstones in the cemetery itself.

Clare Valley - South AustraliaThe Gaelic Cemetery Shiraz is vinified at Pikes Winery in Clare Valley, with the wine being made using a combination of traditional ‘old world’ and modern Australian techniques. Here the emphasis is on capturing the essence of the vineyard with minimal manipulation.

The vineyard produces a naturally very powerful wine and minimal intervention allows this to be expressed. There is no added tannin and wild yeasts of the vineyard are encouraged to carry out part of the fermentation. Typically the wine will remain on skins for approximately 20 days.

To date the reaction to the first release 2005Gaelic Cemetery Shiraz has been very positive. Dr Jay Miller of the Wine Advocate (Nov 2007) described the wines as ‘..a legend in the making!’ and saw fit to award it a score of 98 points. High praise indeed.

2006 Gaelic Cemetery
Shiraz
(limited availability!)

Colour: Very deep red/crimson.

Nose: “Super ripe” dark cherry, chocolate and licorice along with a dash of charry French oak. Secondary aromas of blood plums, pepper and mineral are revealed after a little time in the glass. Very concentrated and complex.

Palate: Rich and ripe with sweet, dark berry fruits balancing out the firm, dry tannins and bright acid. Many different layers and textures become evident as the wine evolves in the glass.

Cellar note: You can drink this now but it will take at least another 10 years to fully appreciate this wine.

Food pairing: This wine is best enjoyed on its own or with a beautiful charcoal grilled steak, without any sauce.

Arjen’ s view: Another powerful wine which, while still very young, again expresses regional elegance and possesses enough “stuffing” to go the distance.
The 2005 was extremely well received and we expect great reviews on this vintage as well. Our most expensive wine at this moment but an investment that will be worth it.
There is a limited production, so sold out means sold out!

Adelaide Hills  - South Australia

Adelaide Hills  - South Australia
Adelaide
Adelaide Hills are an upcoming wine area, located an hour drive east of Adelaide. It is very beautiful area, with rolling hills, planted with vineyards and orchards.
In the early years of last century, Adelaide Hills became home to many German Settlers, that’s why you find names like Hanhdorf and Lobental. Due to the altitude of the vineyards in Adelaide Hills, the region is considered a moderate cold climate. Varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir are considered the flagship varietals for this appellation.
Pike & Joyce

Pike & Joyce The Pike family, long established in winemaking and viticulture and the Joyce family, longtime horticulturists, have come together to develop this 18ha joint venture vineyard at Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills wine region of South Australia.

Pike & Joyce

The vineyard site, which was once apple and pear orchards, is characterized by steep North and East facing slopes and possesses fantastic gravelly clay and loam soils which are ideally suited to the classic cool climate varieties that have been planted – Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The vineyard is all hand pruned and handpicked with the fruit being chilled overnight in the Joyce cool rooms, before being transported to Pike’s Clare Valley winery for vinification.

2008 Pike & Joyce Pinot Gris
Adelaide Hills

Colour: Medium to pale green, yellow tints.

Nose: Typically subtle notes of stone fruit, pear and spice along with a little minerality.

Palate: The wine is delicately flavoured possessing subtle nectarine and pear and has a slightly creamy texture that sits gently on the palate. Bright mineral acidity maneuvers the wine away from finishing fat or heavy.

Cellar note: drink now to enjoy the freshness of the wine.

Food pairing: it is a great wine on it’s own as aperitif or to drink with heavier fish dishes like trout or Salmon. It goes also very nice with a summer salad.

Arjen’ s view: this is a great wine for people that are looking for a fuller wine than a Sauvignon Blanc but don’t like an oaked Chardonnay. It has its refreshing elements but the stone fruit and pear give it a more complex palate, a smart wine!

2007 Pike & Joyce Pinot Noir
Adelaide Hills

Colour: Medium to light red

Nose: Attractive aromas of summer berry compote - ripe dark cherries and strawberries backed up by some high quality chary French oak and some “foresty” notes. Quite complex.

Arjen’ s view: a jewel in the Wine Direction collection, it has been limited produced and we received only a small allocation. A fine example why the Yarra Valley Pinot Noirs are so popular.

Clare Valley - South Australia

Cheviot Hills - North Canterbury
Cheviot Hills is a region of North Canterbury between the Waiau and Hurunui rivers, 100km north of Christchurch on State Highway 1 on the way to Kaikoura. The closest established wine region is Waipara to the south, while the next wine region to the north is the world famous Marlborough.

Cheviot Hills

The vineyards are located on interlaced series of terraced tablelands just south of the braided Waiau River, positioned on north-facing slopes to catch optimum sun. The vineyard terraces consist of a mudstone foundation covered by alluvial gravels with silt loam Phoebe soils on top. The remarkably uniform topsoil means we achieve an even growth pattern and fruit ripeness across the vineyard. The temperature here is generally cool, with high peaks in summer. This gives us ample heat (1125 Growing Degree Days) to ripen the grapes. With rainfall of 700-800mm, irrigation should become unnecessary as the vines mature.

Teece Family Vineyards

Mt Beautiful wines were created by renowned US-based academic Dr. David Teece and his wife Leigh. The desire to invest in his homeland of New Zealand, combined with a passion to create something truly distinctive, led to a typically bold response from David when Leigh suggested starting a vineyard.

In 2004, they planted the first vines on our property's interlaced series of terraced tablelands just south of the braided Waiau River. The development of our Mt Beautiful vineyard was purposely managed in harmony with the topography. Blocks of vines are planted on the terraces interspersed with trees along the tops of the terraces for shelter. The steeper gullies were also brought into production

The Teeces brought together a team of experts and empowered them to search out a new region capable of producing premium wines. Following extensive exploration, they chose Cheviot Hills, this area has never been home to a significant vineyard … until our team saw its potential.

Central Otago
Clare Valley - South Australia

The region

Ringed by mountains interlaced with lakes and deep river gorges Central Otago is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular settings for vineyards.  This unique terroir is also world renowned for producing premium quality wines.

Clare Valley - South Australia

Terroir
The parts of the land where grapes are grown, typically experience hot summers, cold winters and long dry autumns. The qualities of landscape, soil, climate and aspect combine to form a unique wine growing climate.

Central Otago has a distinctive semi-continental climate, found nowhere else in New Zealand. It is one of the hottest, coldest and driest regions in New Zealand. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly during the year with a winter minimum and a summer maximum. To date the reaction to the first release 2005 Gaelic Cemetery Shiraz has been very positive. Dr Jay Miller of the Wine Advocate (Nov 2007) described the wines as ‘..a legend in the making!’ and saw fit to award it a score of 98 points. High praise indeed.

Central Otago soils are moderately old and are free draining even when heavy in texture. The result is a soil low in vigour but high in mineral richness with the ability to use irrigation to keep vines at the desired degree of controlled stress so as to provide optimum fruit quality. All of these attributes have combined to result in Central Otago standing on the world stage as a unique winegrowing terroir, from which premium quality boutique wines are made.

Mitre Rocks

The McCallum family founded Mitre Rocks Vineyard in 2000 with the aim of producing high-quality Central Otago wines with substance and heart. Combining the knowledge from their pastoral farming background and commercial experience with an open-minded approach to vineyard management and winemaking, they involve local experts to get the best out of the land. The first grapes were harvested in 2006, with each subsequent vintage resulting in wines of remarkable quality.

Wine maker Carol Bunn
Carol started her winemaking career in Martinborough, gaining invaluable experience with Pinot Noir under the watchful eye of renowned winemaker Larry McKenna.

She completed vintages abroad in Oregon and Bordeaux, and worked as a winemaker in Canterbury for three years.

In 2001, she started plying her craft back where she grew up in Central Otago, building a stellar reputation early on with the trophy-winning Pinot Noirs she crafted for Akarua Winery. The Akarua Pinot Noir 2002 won Champion Pinot Noir and Champion Wine of the show at the prestigious Air NZ Wine Awards in 2003

With her growing stature as “Queen of Pinot Noir” in the region, VinPro Ltd approached Carol in 2004 to set up, build and take the reins of their new contract winemaking facility in Cromwell. In this capacity, Carol works with 18 different wine companies, including Mitre Rocks Vineyards, to craft their wines.

“My philosophy is to work in closely with my clients to consistently produce great wines which reflect each individual vineyard’s terroir. Every vineyard has its distinctive qualities which we preserve and enhance,” says Carol.

She prefers to take a minimalist approach to winemaking, seeing her role as a caretaker of the wines, rather than a manipulator of the wine character and style.

2006 Pinot Noir
Central Otago - Mitre Rocks

Colour: Medium red.

Nose: A distinctive nose of plums and cherries deliciously supported by hints of spice, coffee and a touch of violet

Palate: You’ll discover a rich, robust and complex wine showing bold, ripe dark fruit and cherry characters, powerful dark fruit flavours are nicely balanced with smoky oak, mushroom and savoury notes on the palate.

Cellar note: The wine is already drinking well but will further develop for at least another 10 years.

Food pairing: The wine pairs well with aromatic meat dishes like slow cooked lamb shanks, game and oven braised quail.

Arjen’ s view: This is the first release of this wine and it is already showing its potential. Made by one of the best wine makers in Central Otago, nick named the ‘Queen of Pinot Noir’ Carol Bunn. For me it is still an affordable Central Otago Pinot Noir that brings you a wine that has well-integrated tannins and good structure, which is not excessively weighty, but finely balanced.
